Florida Principles of Computer Science

Course Description

In this course, high school students build a strong foundation in the principles of computer science and software engineering. They study computer hardware, digital tools, networks and internet protocols, operating systems, and collaborative design. An extended programming unit takes students from algorithms and Python fundamentals through object-oriented programming, concurrency, data analysis, modeling and simulation, cryptography, and SDLC models, ending with a personal budget dashboard capstone. Students also explore emerging technologies and AI, analyze social engineering and security threats, and examine digital safety, digital rights, the societal impact of computing, and digital currencies.

Course Learning Goals

  • Explain the organization and function of computer hardware and software.

  • Describe how networks and internet protocols transmit data reliably and securely.

  • Design, implement, and evaluate Python programs using algorithms, data structures, functions, and classes.

  • Apply concurrency, data analysis, and computational modeling to real-world problems.

  • Explain the principles of cryptography and how they protect digital communication.

  • Apply software development life cycle models to plan, build, and test software.

  • Analyze cybersecurity threats, including social engineering, and apply protective strategies.

  • Evaluate the societal, legal, ethical, and economic impacts of computing, including digital currencies.
