Florida Foundations of Computer Science, Grade 5

Course Description

In this course, fifth grade students explore how computers process information and how to solve problems with code and data. They study the computation cycle; troubleshoot hardware, software, and network issues; build touch-typing skills; and research and present evidence-based findings. In Scratch, students debug algorithms, compare search strategies, draw with the Pen tool, and use variables, operators, conditionals, and loops, ending with an interactive scene builder capstone. They also work with everyday databases, graphic organizers, and simulations, investigate intelligent systems, and practice fact-checking, ethical technology use, and safe online habits.

Course Learning Goals

  • Explain the input, processing, storage, and output stages of the computation cycle.

  • Troubleshoot common hardware, software, and network problems.

  • Type using correct home row technique and common keyboard shortcuts.

  • Find, evaluate, and cite online sources and use evidence to support decisions.

  • Debug algorithms and compare the efficiency of search algorithms.

  • Build Scratch programs that use variables, operators, conditionals, loops, and nested loops.

  • Analyze data using databases, tables, graphic organizers, and simulations.

  • Explain how computers simulate intelligent behavior and apply fact-checking and safe online practices.
