Florida Discovering Computer Science

Course Description

In this course, high school students explore the breadth of computer science, from hardware and networks to programming, data, and the impact of computing on society. They study computer components, digital tools and file types, network fundamentals, operating systems, and collaborative software design. Students build Python programs using control flow, functions, libraries, and object-oriented programming, apply the software development life cycle, and complete a personal budget dashboard capstone. They analyze data and build models and simulations, explore emerging technologies and AI, and examine cybersecurity, digital safety, digital rights, misinformation, and the impact of technology on work, commerce, and the environment.

Course Learning Goals

  • Explain how computer components, input and output devices, and power systems work together.

  • Describe how wired and wireless networks transmit data across the internet.

  • Develop, test, and debug Python programs that use control flow, functions, libraries, and classes.

  • Apply the software development life cycle and collaborative practices to software projects.

  • Analyze large datasets and build computational models and simulations.

  • Evaluate emerging technologies, including AI, virtual and augmented reality, and robotics.

  • Identify security vulnerabilities and apply strategies to protect privacy and data.

  • Analyze the legal, ethical, and societal impacts of computing, including digital rights and misinformation.
