Florida Digital Discoveries, Grade 8

Course Description

In this course, eighth grade students apply programming, data analysis, and software development practices to real-world problems. They create digital products that combine multiple file formats and collaborate in PowerPoint. Students write Python programs using expressions, loops, conditionals, modular functions, and classes, evaluate algorithm efficiency, and build a vending machine capstone using object-oriented programming. They collect and analyze data, query databases with SQL, build and evaluate models and simulations in Excel, implement the software development life cycle, and examine network security, information security threats, the influence of digital media, civic tech engagement, and the impact of the internet.

Course Learning Goals

  • Create collaborative digital products that integrate text, data, images, and video.

  • Write Python programs using expressions, iterative and conditional structures, and modular functions.

  • Design object-oriented programs with interacting classes and objects.

  • Evaluate algorithms for efficiency and limitations.

  • Collect, clean, analyze, and visualize data and query databases using SQL.

  • Build, run, and evaluate models and simulations of natural phenomena.

  • Apply the software development life cycle to build and test a program.

  • Analyze network and information security threats and the social, ethical, and legal impacts of technology.
