Florida Digital Discoveries, Grade 6

Course Description

In this course, sixth grade students build a foundation in computing, programming, and data. They explore file formats, databases, and desktop and online applications and create collaborative digital products. Students learn to plan solutions with algorithms, flowcharts, and pseudocode, then write Python programs with data types, conditionals, loops, lists, and functions, culminating in a personal budget capstone. They design databases and models in Excel; explore the software development life cycle, human-computer interaction, and AI; and study cybersecurity, digital identity, encryption, fair use, citations, and technology careers.

Course Learning Goals

  • Choose appropriate file formats and applications and explain how databases store and retrieve information.

  • Plan solutions with algorithms, flowcharts, and pseudocode.

  • Write Python programs that use data types, conditionals, loops, lists, and functions.

  • Build, analyze, and visualize databases and models in a spreadsheet.

  • Describe the software development life cycle, HCI technologies, and the characteristics of AI.

  • Apply access control, strong passwords, and basic encryption to protect data.

  • Manage a positive digital identity and follow acceptable use, fair use, and citation practices.

  • Explore technology careers and the workplace skills they require.
