Florida Conceptual Cybersecurity

Course Description

In this course, high school students build the conceptual foundation needed to understand and protect computing systems. They study computer hardware and firmware, digital tools, and how networks operate, including protocols, DHCP, and subnetting. Students learn programming and software engineering concepts in Python, explore data analysis and computational limits, and apply cryptography, encryption methods, and SDLC models, ending with a personal budget dashboard capstone. The course examines security vulnerabilities, applied security strategies, social engineering, ransomware, access control, digital safety, internet regulations, and the impact of computing and digital currencies.

Course Learning Goals

  • Explain how computer hardware, firmware, and software contribute to system security.

  • Describe how network protocols, DHCP, and subnetting support reliable and secure networks.

  • Develop and test Python programs and apply software engineering practices.

  • Explain cryptographic principles and select appropriate encryption and authentication methods.

  • Identify security vulnerabilities and apply layered security strategies.

  • Analyze social engineering, ransomware, and access control risks.

  • Apply digital safety, privacy, and legal compliance practices.

  • Evaluate the societal and economic impact of computing, including digital currencies.
