Florida Computer Programming Fundamentals Honors

Course Description

In this honors course, high school students develop advanced programming skills alongside a broad understanding of computing systems. They study hardware, networks, protocols, software types, and collaborative design, then build an extensive Python foundation that includes data structures, libraries, object-oriented programming, collaborative development with GitHub, and parallel processing, ending with a personal budget dashboard capstone. Students analyze data and complex systems, explore cryptography, and develop and deploy a web application with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. The course also covers emerging technologies, the branches and algorithms of AI, security and social engineering, digital safety and ethics, the impact of computing, and digital currencies.

Course Learning Goals

  • Explain how computer hardware, software, and networks work together to process and transmit data.

  • Design, implement, test, and debug Python programs using data structures, functions, classes, and libraries.

  • Collaborate on software using version control and apply SDLC models to plan, build, and maintain applications.

  • Build and deploy an interactive web application using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

  • Analyze data and model complex systems using Python and spreadsheets.

  • Explain cryptographic principles and select appropriate encryption methods.

  • Describe the branches, algorithms, and evaluation methods of AI.

  • Evaluate security threats and the legal, ethical, social, and economic impacts of computing.
